The American Swedish Institute (housed in a 33-room stone castle) hosts a variety of fun activities for families, including cooking classes, concerts, artifact scavenger hunts and festivals. The museum has a wonderful collection of Scandinavian art and fun, interactive displays. They also host a story time on Saturdays in December, from 2 to 3 p.m. This family drop-in program features volunteers and occasional guest artists sharing classic and new storybooks from Sweden such as stories from Nils Holgersson, the boy who flew on the back of a goose all over Sweden, to Pippi Longstocking, the girl with red braids and mismatched socks. The Museum is beautifully decorated around Christmas. Check the web for seasonal events, such as their Nordic Christmas celebration. Pastries and coffee can be purchased in the basement cafe. Kids can enjoy a Pippi Longstocking float. There is also a gift shop. Children 6 and under are FREE. Other admission fees ranging from $4-$6.
