The Mill City Museum chronicles the flour milling industry that dominated world flour production for roughly a half-century and fueled the growth of Minneapolis. Built within the ruins of theWashburn Mill, the museum provides a multi-sensory, interactive journey. The story of flour milling comes to life through the eight-story Flour Tower and other hands-on exhibits. Children can bake cookies, sample bread and play in the interactive water table area that is fashioned after the Mississippi River. The Flour Tower can be a bit scary for young children (lots of loud noises, machinery and a simulated explosion), but our toddler son LOVED this museum. The museum hosts a 30 minute story time for preschoolers and their families at 11:30 and 3:00pm. This program is included in the admission fee.

I have been there with my two boys (3 and 5). They loved it. The Flour Tower tour was scary because of the loud noises.

My kids love Mill City, especially the water area. They also enjoyed the “Minneapolis in 19 Minutes Flat” movie–at only 19 minutes long, it held their interest even though they’re still young.
Did anyone notice that the admission fees at Mill City, the History Center, and Fort Snelling went up recently? A membership to the Historical Society is now a better deal than ever.
