Ok…so this is one of the Hidden Treasures in Saint Paul. How could you resist the urge to take your child to a building called a “Laboratory of Meat Science”? We just had to check this out!!!
The U of M Dairy Food Products Salesroom is open to the public on Wednesdays from 3-5 p.m. It is located in Room 166 Andrew Boss Lab of Meat Science, 1354 Eckles Avenue on the St. Paul Campus (directions ).
Popular items include cheese curds, Gouda, Aged cheddar, and ICE CREAM!!! Ice cream is sold in half gallons and pints; frozen yogurt is sold in quarts and pints. Availability and prices do vary (they usually have about a dozen flavors). No cones or sundaes, but they do provide spoons. Bring your own wet wipes and sit out front on the expansive green plaza in front of the building (perfect for a picnic…no tables) and gorge yourself. Our personal favorite flavor to date…chocolate peanut butter cup!!! A pint goes for $2.50 and can provide a great sugar-high for a family of four.
While this may not be a trip in and of itself, The Raptor Center, the affordable bowling alley at the Student Center and the agricultural barns (cows, sheep and pigs) are all within stroller distance. Gibbs Farm is just a short drive away.
